“Resistance is a girl who is changing the world” – display at Bucharest PRIDE 2021. Under the title “Resistance is a girl who is changing the world”, Giuvlipen – the first independent feminist Romani theatre company in Romania – presents at Bucharest Pride 2021 three video-poems capturing inspiring, complex and unfiltered stories of young LGBTQI+ activists from East Europe and Central Asia.
★Bety Cat Fur – The story of Bety, from Romania, about a bullying instance being approached by a theatrical troupe, about multiple discrimination and resistance met on the way of building a theatrical career. ★The Black Hoopoe – The story of Bianca, from Romania, a Romani activist fighting for more visibility in the LGBTQI+ community regardless of ethnicity or age, through an online entertainment show. ★Beyond the binary – The story of Deniz, from Kîrgîstan, a teen who creates comics and fights through art against teen discrimination regardless of nationality and sexual orientation. The stories have been documented during November 2020, through interviews with these young activists; texts have been created based on them by Mihaela Drăgan, also signing the artistic concept of the video material. Each and every story has been brought to life by Romani artists of Romania. The display of the three episodes, which are part of an 11 episode series with the same name, available online, will be followed by a discussion with the playwright and actress Mihaela Drăgan and part of the involved artists.
The event is organised with the support of the Accept Association at Bucharest Pride (6th – 14th of August 2021). This year’s theme is “Come Out. Speak Up.” In 2021 we celebrate 20 years since Article 200 has been repealed from the Penal Code, which incriminated homosexuality, and we take a look back to the evolution of our rights and community during these past 20 years, aiming to build together a safe, inclusive future for each and every one of us. Together once again, building safe spaces where our identity is celebrated.
