Until 2001, being gay in Romania was illegal and you could spend five years in prison for it. Article 200 had become the Moral Militia’s terror and blackmailing instrument of choice. You either became a snitch, or were sent for reeducation. During the communist period, hunting gay people was a constant preoccupation of the Party, so gay life could only exist in hiding. Without today’s dating apps, how could you meet anyone? Dominic Brezianu knows some of these secrets, and has agreed to share them with us during a tour of the Center of Bucharest.
